For me, a "good" route is one with low traffic and a decent surface. If that's how you view it, then there are lots of resources available.
Have you looked at the Illinois Bicycling Maps on the Illinois DOT website? They are downloadable county by county, are an excellent resource, and you could figure out a low traffic route very easily by using those.

I assume you are aware of the Madison County Transit trails that lead east out of the St. Louis metro area. If not, check out their website. The Glen Carbon Trail takes you to Marine, while the Nickel Plate Trail will take you all the way to Alhambra, IL, and from either of those places you can take lots of low traffic town and county roads east-northeast.

I'd use the Illinois Bicycle Maps ahead of google bicycling.
