Gus, I don't know if I'm too late to help, but I live in Ann Arbor and I think it's great. I can discuss routes and other biking details with you if you like, and lift a pint with you in a Michigan greeting.
I would be sure to have a lock, that can lock both wheels. Strangely most of the students think that a bike is secure with only a spike connected to a meter post. One can be lead to wonder about education sometimes ...
