Tire replacement

I had my rear tire get sliced up by road debris yesterday. It's a total loss and needs to be replaced. The tires had about 1000mi on them and I'm wondering if it's better to replace both tires (front & back) to start fresh? Does riding a new rear tire and older front affect ride characteristics/quality/safety? I could swap out both tires and keep the older front tire as a backup. It's showing wear, but not enough for immediate replacement.

FYI, current tires are Vittoria Rubino Tech and I'm thinking of going with Conti Ultra 2000.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
