you need to make a clearance groove inside the grip, first.

those guys lay the groove over the outside,,
the bar end cable exits right on the OD of the handle bar tube.
straighter the better.. index shifting hates cable drag.

A roll of cork/foam tape wrapped 2 or 3 times will also do the grip substitution .
I've had my eyes open for the "right" grips for her trike every since the foam ones started to split out. Grips that will work with bar end shifters are hard to find. These are the first that I've seen advertised. It would be nice to read a review or hear from somebody who has experience with them.

Frankly, she's happy with the electrical tape but I want something better for her. I'm thinking that using handlebar wrap will probably look goofier than what she has now because it'll still have the same 3/4" of electrical tape to terminate the wrap.
