+1 on what bikegeek said.
There are several places in the L5P, east Decatur, and Avondale area where the path ends and you must take the neighborhood streets. Most places where this happens there is a sign letting the rider know that the street is part of the designated bike path/route.

Same thing happens in Clarkston in a couple of places for about a mile total.
If you ride out on a Saturday or Sunday morning you can "follow" the regular riders out to SM. They know the way.
