It's annoying.
I use 2 different models of Planet Bike computers, and both reset the top speed with each trip reset. They retain the overall odometer, and the bike 1/2 odometer readings; but everything else is on a trip-by-trip basis.
I don't think any computer retains max speed as a permanent readng, like a video game high score that you try to beat on each ride.
