The lesson here is not to avoid a particular mode of transportation, it's to not ride like a knob like your friends did, or to pay attention like my neighbors didn't.
It made me change my mind for a few years, then it got too expensive to insure. These days it costs an arm and a leg to get car insurance, MC insurance is both arms, both legs and first born male child. My Brother-in-law parked his motorcycle because of insurance costs at least one year.
