Well, thats part of the problem... it was around 1 pm. I never ride early in this area. I come to Whittier from N. Orange County so it takes about an hour.

Despite my lazy habits, I still see other riders this late in the day. I have given a few the heads-up about the stalker.

Bottom line is: when you pass the firestation and the blind curve, focus on the stop sign and any vehicles that might approach it from E. Los Altos (barely visible through the brush). If its all clear, go ahead and bomb the hill towards Vallecito. However if any vehicle shows up at the stop sign, odds are its our man and he has timed his arrival to make trouble. There are no co-incidents in this situation, so cover your brakes or begin to slow until you feel its safe to open up the speed.
