Some shoes have the threaded inserts integrated into the sole. I didn't see this on most of Shimano's MTB shoe offerings. I think they had them integrated on the road shoes with the dual Look/SPD cleat arrangement. But basically I think there is a mix of shoes with and without integrated holes. The M087G I ordered is supposed to use cleat nuts.
