Some rims have a piece of metal inside at the joint which aligns the ends when it is built. Sometimes those can become loose and make ticking sounds. I had a rim once that would always make the ticking sounds below ~6mph, driving me nuts on the steepest climbs. At higher speeds it made no sounds at all.
