Excuse the hackneyed phrase, but this appears to be a real "win-win" situation. You learn to wrench and simultaneously perform a valuable service for people in the area.

I'm learning to wrench on my own from books and occasional trips to my preferred LBS where the owner/mechanic is happy to let me watch and provide tips on wrenching. Having the LBS mechanics right there while the work is happening will provide an opportunity to learn quickly and avoid some of the pitfalls of the do-it-yourself method.
