new to MTB, and casette hubs-new chain-old cogs

I normally live over at the C&V page.Im into roadbikes and well this is my first real 9spd casette setup

my 2 kids go to a MTB youth ride 2x a week
I built them some sweet bikes,

the coach or leader said if I want to come along I am more then welcome.

drat- I got to put another MTB together.....well lets just say I love roadbikes.
I know no history of this bike-
I picked up this trek 4500 with rock shox at the dump-the front wheel was toast but easily swapped from the other trek mtb that came from the same place.
stripped down the 9 speed casette and cleaned every cog-the smallest was cracked, the 13t had a chipped tooth, replaced the 11t with a spar i stole from another bike
stripped down the crankset and cleaned it also.
well I put on a new chain, grips and brake pads.
total money in the bike-maybe 20-25

first ride,- chain hop in several but not all cogs
I know enough that the problem must be in the casette.
back home now- casette is off and later I was planning to file all the burrs off of the worn teeth

the question
am I wasting my time or should I just buy a new shimano 9spd-casette for 25?

(dambed-Ill have 50 in it then!)
