Sorry, I was replying vaguely. I agree that no screw will hold the bikes up. I used WingIts wall anchors attached to the 2x4, and then regular screws to attach the closet rod holders on to the 2x4 itself, just like you suggested. It will handle a 26lbs bike no problem.
