Yes. If you loaded maps onto the unit you would need to redo that. If your maps on on the microSD card, they'd be safe. You would have the same issue if you got the replacement from Garmin for $70. It'd be up to you to load your maps onto it.
There is a basemap on the unit which will also be lost. The basemap is very coarse with limited information so is pretty useless anyway. In the past, you could call up Garmin support and they'd connect and reload the basemap for you. I don't know if they'll do that anymore now that the 705 has been discontinued for so long. I've never bothered and haven't missed it.
All my maps are on SD cards.
