really, why not?

I've used XT (or LX, whatever) front with 105 STI shifters, too....

I think the critical issue is the size of the chainrings, not the shifters.

also- since there are very few top pull road front derailleurs around (at least when i was looking a couple years ago), you generally need to run a mtb front deraill. or rig up a pulley if you have top tube-routed shifter cables.
