I sold a friend a 1951 Shelby 52A yesterday. He has been looking for one for years. As we were loading the beastie in his car, he commented on the weight of the bike. I told him it was probably more than 60 pounds and that these bikes were marketed to 8 year old boys when they were new. And most of those kids rode the snot out of them back then... And the kids that thought they were too light added baskets to them and used the bikes to deliver newspapers.

I could just imagine a kid today (or some forum members) trying to ride one of these heavy, high geared, (many boys bikes came with 52-18 single speed gearing) monsters today.
I'm laughing with you! There's a boatload of old Schwinns in northern Nevada. My daily rider is a Schwinn Varsity step through frame that is at least 40 years old. I ride it with a rack and panniers all over town with nary a problem. Heavy? 'Shrug', grow a pair of legs!
