Threw my box of bike tools and floor pump in the car and drove over to help him out. His tube had developed a tear right at the valve stem so it couldn't be patched. I had a spare tube with presta valve. His bike takes Shrader valve tubes. We made it work. and he got back and forth from work today without a problem.

j/k. You did the right thing. Family first, but I've helped a couple of friends fix their bikes too.
