If you write a little jingle, your great-grandchildren can still own the copyright to it. If you design something useful, you can get a patent for 17 years. After that, the design belongs to the world.
You could still own copyright on a bike too, if it has a distinct shape, which the Birdy does. Brompton has copyright on the distinct bend in the main tube, IIRC.
