The bike I left locked to a railing in a druggy area was an old steel roadbike with DT shifters and bolt-on wheels. It had a rattle-can paint job in Vile Green and looked pretty ropey but it rode very well.
Now that old steel roadies are worth something again, I would think about a 3-speed.
