Whether or not you get Memorial Day off in the States depends highly on your job. I have it off because the machinist's union where I work has it negotiated as one of their holidays, but we only get half of the usual (not Veterans Day or Presidents Day etc.) since they traded them for the whole week off at Christmas. I'm not in the union since they consider engineers to be management, but nothing can get done and so the company puts us all on the same schedule. At my previous job where I worked for the government, we obviously got all the federal holidays but had to use vacation for Christmas week. My fiancee, who is a social worker at a hospital, has a normal work day today, no holiday.
I put a ride in this morning and it was nice not to have the pressure to accomplish anything or be anywhere on time.
