just a suggestion.. you might try is replacing the tires with completely slick tires. unless you're riding primarily off road, those knobby mountain bike tires are slowing you down and make handling worse when you're on the street. a $20-30 investment could mean a lot more enjoyment. the first thing i do on all my 26" wheel bikes is replace the tires with road tires since i don't do a lot of off roading.

also, if you're in NYC, i'd consider getting a ulock.. but you know your area better than me
I'm not too concerned about speed and handling, more about ruggedness and durability. We spend most of the time on dirt, potholes, and uneven boardwalk plants with debris sticking out. Plus I ride for cardio, so the harder it is for me, the better. I let the gf relax while I get my work out on. Except for steep hills, lol.
