I believe this to be an incorrect statement. When I had a 1x9, with the chainring in the outer position, the chain would get thrown off to the outside. Only happened when shifting to smaller cogs quickly, but happened frequently enough that the chainring moved inboard and a bashgaurd was installed. As it was a square taper crank, I even played with moving chainline inward, and it did not remedy the problem.
Ah. Thank you. I never really thought about the front derailleur interacting with the chain at all when not actively shifting gears. I guess when you shift the rear derailleur, the chain acts sort of like cracking a whip.
