I think it's also worth noting that when we visited North America last we borrowed my FiL's Dodge Caravan, and it is excellent for bicycle carriage. The seats are easy to remove, the height allowed bikes to be wheeled in with the fronts on, plenty of room for other stuff, and after 17,000km north-south and back again, we didn't have any problems with the automatic transmission... and the fuel economy was fine.
