Agree with the suggestion of finding a good hill to test ride up. Also, coming from a triple, make sure the compact crank suits you. I'm in the minority, but I don't like them. Finally, don't be shy about requesting long test rides. If you are intent on buying from an LBS, I would think nothing of taking each bike out for an hour.
