STI Lever Deflection Problem

Hello.

I have a problem with my rear STI 105 lever that is best described with pictures. Whenever I shift the bike (up or down) while the level is fully seated (i.e. not braking), the level top is deflecting out of the hood seat. This causes the brake lever to shift towards the center of the bike and annoy the living cramp out of me.

I'm an experienced mtb mechanic, but my knowledge of STI shifters is limited. Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions for a fix?

Shifting and braking are good
Cables and housing are a little old and gummy (I will replace them this weekend), but that doesn't seem to be the problem as I can deflect the lever without shifting.
