This accident, sort of reminds me of a video posted on BF eons ago. It was a guy on a recumbent bike in Saudi Arabia, in high speed traffic. While it looked nice, it also gave me the shakes. Because he wasn't going very fast at all.
Not sure if the victim woud really have been more visible if they were on an upright if the driver didn't use his mirrors. Same thing happened to a woman in Boston IIRC. Hell, in my neighborhood I saw a woman in a Hummer push a kid right into the curb doing a "parallel right". Safest place at an intersection is right in the middle of the f'n lane- bike lane or no.
