Back in 1977, my wife and I crossed Missouri from Harrisonville to St. Louis on a cross-country bike trip from LA to Washington DC. My recollection is that our most difficult hills were in Missouri and West Virginia. Unlike the Rockies where we rode US highways with restrictions on the road grades for truck traffic, in those two states we were on back roads with no such limitations. I presume those hills in Missouri were part of the Ozarks.
