i saw some guy on clipless pedals fall off his bike today! he was trying to stop without getting off his bike. he was almost at a standstill when his whole body went into a violent jerking motion as he fought for his balance by a shoe that was locked to his pedal. he landed pretty crudely on his elbow (he was wearing a helmet) he was on pavement, and not even a trail. I have platform pedals, but when I use them it feels too scary when I go off a curb and I lose contact with my pedals. Clipless gotta be sweet for riding on pavement, but for trail riding toestraps make good sense. Also with toestraps you have more positions for your feet since they aren't locked in a fixed position. If you want it all, don't limit yourself. Both clipless and toestraps can make you lose balance at one time or another, and then there's the hardcore guys who dare ride without 'em.
