I've rode my rump raw

Last Tuesday I went 60 miles and the last 15 were REALLY uncomfortable due to my rump not being in shape. Last night I did 50 and it was worse as the rump had not fully recovered. The question I have is that is there a point to where you are not progressing due to not "healing" up enough before you get on the bike again? I know a slow build-up is probably best and that's what I'm doing but I don't want to go backwards by stretching it out too much.
