My take is that it's some combination of their ubiquity, outsourcing their frame construction, their mistreatment of LeMond in favor of that other guy, and possibly other factors. I don't have a horse in this race, so it's actually kind of amusing to watch these threads play out in the 41.
Actually you could match all the why I hate (newer) Treks with the why I love older, vintage Treks. The vintage steel bikes from the 80s get a lot of love on this site. But they were made in the USA, LeMond was still in his racing prime, and their prices were reasonable. I wouldn't mind a new Trek 520 touring bike, though. I like the white frame and blue decals.
