Rich - The trail that you are referring to is actually called the Mt. Vernon trail. A good spot to park you car and get on the trail is Gravelly Point Park, which is just north of National airport. There are many parks on the Mt Vernon parkway south of the beltway that have parking also. A good one which has lots of parking is the Belle Haven park area. A lot of people park there and ride the trail.
