I often see them on the helmets of motorcyclists traveling 60, sometimes in the opposite direction. I worked for a construction company that built stores for 7-Eleven, and I found out a couple of things about them that should be pretty obvious. Attempted armed robberies of them has plummeted in the last twenty years or so, for a number of reasons. Time lock safes, encouraging LEO's to use the restrooms, and very visible video surveillance all play a part. As far as people not knowing what they are; maybe now, but that is changing fast.
