The gears are set up that way because a chainring with the same gearing would hit the ground.
the tube on the front connects him to the tow vehical to get him to speed (I presume)
bars don't manner a lot when you are drafting a wall. They also won't accedently clip the tow bar (that would blow)
a rear brake isn't needed for a speed attempt ant would likely lock up quickly. He just needs one brake to feather his speed down. No panic stopping at highways speeds on sand.
