I've been to NZ twice, and I can vouch for what Machka said. It gets *very* cold there -- even in summer. Looking at your dates, my advice would be do the South Island first (i.e. April) before the winter really sets in. Then it the North island a bit later, where it mightn't be too bad. Once you get around to the Dunedin/Invercargill area in the south, there is no land between that coastline and Antarctica. The weather often reflects that.
