Why have the tubes and string...sure its free. I use Velcro and do the same thing. It works great even with a full winter of using it. Just take a piece of hook/loop Velcro and wrap it around the leg above the ankle and then take a piece of the opposite(hook/loop) and put the two together. When the hook/loop gets salty/sandy it doesn't matter. The area that is being used is always being used and it remains clean. I've had no trouble keeping the pant legs out of the way and the Velcro always stayed Velcro-ed. It's probably a lot cheaper than any chain guard.

To the OP you have also have to worry about getting pant legs caught on frame pumps. Instead of using chain guards use Velcro or something like that so your pant legs stay right tight up against the legs and don't flap in the air.
