Always record your serial number in an official manner. Use one of the registries online at least. If he had done it even after the fact and you had no other proof it was yours you could be the one arrested and lose the bike to boot. Then I would call the Chief of Police and give him a piece of my mind. Glad you got your bike back but that was a very risky operation.
