This thread represents another reason I'm on the soapbox for Shimano hubs.
Although I seriously frown upon the profusion of front cone types in their wheelset hubs...
AFAIK that's just in the straight-pull and reverse-spoke types though, and only on the front.
And since they're a big mob who aren't going anywhere, presumably these cones will be available for years to come... and generally, all you might ever need to buy for a Shimano hub if you know how to adjust one, is one set of cones and bearings, if you got it second-hand. So the question mark only applies to second-hand stuff of the fancier type, maybe only at some point in the future.
Campy support is probably in the same league, but it's hard to think of anyone else coming close, and Shimano's rear hub design pwns, and ubiquity rules.
The only reasons to look elsewhere are as follows:
1. Serious weight weenie
2. Chris King or other boutique brand fanboy
3. You only have fancy wheelsets with proprietary spokes, or integral hubs, ala Lightweight, see
#1 , really.
4. Um...
