I would never do a significant ride without clipless, but they are not for everyone. They are helpful when grinding up steep hills, doing tempo up less steep hills, and accelerating. They also keep your foot on the pedal when spinning and on any bumpy terrain. But they will not magically make you 5 mph faster, and based on riding style, may not make any difference for some people.
