Columbia Lexington - Commuting Conversion

I have decided to try and get into shape and commute to work via bicycle as i do not live far. I dug out an old Columbia Lexington out of the garage and was thinking I might try and upgrade it for modern cruising/commuting purposes.

The tires on it say they are compatible with British K-2 and America S-6 tires... what size equivalent is that?

I found some really nice wheels with 700c tires and a Nexus 3 speed hub set that I was hoping would fit the bicycle well. Your recommendation?

Also, do you think a bottom bracket conversion is a good direction to go? Will this be difficult to do?

Thanks for your thoughts.
