They are just as easy to use and pump up as a Schrader (automotive) valves and less fuss than Presta valves. I believe all German and Dutch commuter and city bikes come with them. Any bicycle pump equipped for Presta valves can pump them up, and with a 1€ screw-on adapter any automotive/bicycle pump or air compressor with an automotive chuck can pump them up.

I always carried an adapter in my bike travel tool kit (next to the adjustable wrench in the picture) as well as have one screwed on to one of the valves on the bike.
