I have the tools and have taken the inter-3, inter-7, and inter-8 apart many times before (and yes, got them back together and working without mysterious "spare parts"). Figured I'd ask as even though I know a lot about these hubs, I do not know everything. I'll have a look tonight and see if I can spot a problem once it's out of the shell. That part is at least simple to do.
At the very least, you will have to remove the carrier from the axle to see anything. By attaching the cassette joint and working the shifter, you should see the clutch snap forward when you shift to the fifth gear position. If it appears to hang up, you will likely have to remove the driver to sort it out. This requires special tools as you must know if you have fiddled around with these before.
