i would stick with the 500. I have the 800 and it gives you maps which i seldom use and a few more metrics on the display. The display is not great in the sun and that supposedly is one of the key benefits of the new 1000 but at ~$600 it's not worth it to me. i think you're mostly paying for the ability to have your wife send you encouraging messages (ride faster honey) while you're in the middle of a race.
