90rpm is fast? Obviously the small ring isn't meant for extended use on easier terrain but the 36 makes it more useful for that purpose than 34. 39 is even better if a 39x27/28 is the lowest gear you'll ever need but in hilly places thats not low enough for most people
Yes, 90rpm at lighter loads starts feeling stupid high and I want to upshift. I'm not talking about a hard sprint type situation. Just cruising along on the small ring and I want a burst of acceleration to make a light. I don't want to hit the upshift button and realize I'm out of gears. I'm well acquainted with the climbing in SoCal and, since I like to spin up hills, I wouldn't want to go much, if any, lower than a 34/27 granny gear (or the equivalent gear inches.)
