Well you obviously know what he wants better than he does - good for you. Hybrids can and do have attributes that bring them closer to a MTB or to a road bike. Not everyone who wants suspension forks on their hybrid should "just buy a MTB". Not everyone who wants skinnier tires and the option for a lower hand position should "just buy a road bike". Hybrids can and do accommodate such features. Thankfully, we each get to make these decisions for ourselves.
