We've done the night ferry from Newcastle, UK to Ijmuiden, NL, and from Ouistreham, FR to Portsmouth, UK (I've done that one twice).
Have a relaxing dinner, wander around the ship, get a good night's sleep, have breakfast if you can (I usually can't manage much) ... and you're ready to roll the next day.
