I combine the double layer of Shimano Pro gel tape with leather fingerless, knit-back gloves. The leather gives an excellent grip and I feel very much attached to the bar. Leather is a bit of a pain to care for but I'd rather leave a bit of it on the ground than some of my own 'leather' (have done both).

I don't mind finishing off a tape job with electrical tape. It may not last forever and does leave a residue. I'll eventually choose something more permanent and less gooey, but, while I'm still fiddling with my cockpit -- it's fine.

BTW: They use it by the kilo on "Le Tour."
