It's pretty hard to mistake a flat, I wouldn't worry about it. I know what you mean though, on my last MTB ride I lessened the preload, and the compression and rebound dampening to make my fork a little faster and more absorbent. Lol, it was wierd!! I am used to having a stiff setting. But the softer fork made it possible to make sharper turns. I would go into a switchback way to fast(wich usually results in the front tire washing out) but this time it stuck, and I was able to get through without a wipeout.
