The video does show problems with the bike lanes that are between the curb and the lane of parked cars. I agree with him. They have necessitated separate signals which make everyone wait longer. They help motorists forget the existence of the bike lane, making them more prone to turn into the bike lane without looking.

On the other hand, even with these flaws, I give NYC a lot of credit for all it has done. It has put bike lanes or sharrows on nearly every street I have seen. They clearly are inviting people to cycle. And many people have accepted the invitation.

A lot of the videographer's complaints are problems that arise from simply being in NYC. These are problems that have no obvious solutions. Conditions are always going to be far from perfect. Trucks making deliveries need access to the businesses, and they have to park illegally. I believe there is a legal term called reasonable access, and we have to tolerate the inconvenience. I don't think it does any good to bicker and bellow about how they are blocking the bike lane. Life is tough, and New Yorkers are tough. We typically have more irritating things happen in a day than many suburbanites have happen in a week or a month. We learn to raise our eyebrows and move on and forget all of these things. I couldn't even write down all the things that happen in a day that would have other people blowing their tops. There is nothing that can be done. To understand New York, you have to understand this.
