No, it's ignorance on your part. Even with your detailed analysis I find my Gravity SS 29'er w/Schwalbe Big Ben's make my backside less sore than riding my Minivelo w/Maxxis 20x2.35" tires. And I didn't need to modify my riding style to achieve this.

Also, did this include big, gaping potholes? And being required to ride through areas where the road is completely removed and industrial repair work is being performed?

Your environmental experiments are wonderful, but cover the conditions YOU are subjected to. I speak from MY experiences. And when both bikes have fat tires, and both have nice strong rims, I get the better & less painful ride via a larger wheeled bike.
