stationary bike or trainer?

Hey all,

I am a re-born mountain biker. I used to ride a lot in college, then found excuses not to ride (too busy, got married, had two kids, working two jobs, etc.) and got WAY too fat. I finally broke down last summer and bought a bike. I was kind of a puss about riding it. This year I am excited to get back on and rack up the miles. So my question is this...

It is snowing like crazy here and I am in horrible shape. I want to prepare for the summers riding. Should I get a trainer so I can atleast get my body used to my own bike, or a stationary bike that I can set up and leave it. I could ride the stationary bike for the rest of the winter and still keep using it in the mornings or evenings in the summer. Plus, my wife could use it. If I get the trainer, it is pretty much just for the winter, and pretty much just for me. Hmmm, decisions, decisions...

Thanks
